Wollemi 90 Ultralight Expedition Pack

Description

The Wollemi 90 Ultralight Expedition Pack takes all we know from nearly 50 years of making and designing heavy packs for heavy loads and combines it with all we have learned from building ultralight packs. The result is an ultralight pack that can handle large loads up to 30kg with the comfort you expect from old school gear haulers. This makes it perfect for winter trips, packrafting, or long expeditions where having the space and support to carry significant weight comfortably matters.

Weighing just 1.16 kilograms, the Wollemi 90 is one of the lightest packs of its size on the market and best in class when you consider comfort and durability as well.

For Ultralight and Canyon Packs

Your torso length, not your back length, determines your pack size.

For 35-40L Packs:

Harness Size (Unisex)

Back Length

Small

Up to 43 cm

Medium

43-48 cm

Large

48 cm and above

For 45-90L Packs:

Harness Size (Unisex)

Back Length

Small

Up to 43 cm

Medium

43-51 cm

Large

51 cm and above

How to Measure Back Length:

  1. Locate the top of your hipbone (pelvic crest) on the side of your body. (Note: the pelvic crest slopes down at the front – but we are interested in the location of the highest point of your pelvis).

  2. Approximate the top of your hipbone in your lumbar region, on your spine. Wrap the tape measure horizontally from the top of your hipbone to the spine to confirm this position if required. Make a note of this location.

  3. Locate your C7 vertebrae. This is the highest bony protrusion on the back of your neck and is roughly in line with where your trapezius meets your neck. Make a note of this location.

  4. Measure the length between your C7 vertebrae and the location you found on your lumbar spine in step 2.

Wollemi 90,

The whippa 90 handled a 14 day load out well, it was certainly not a light weight load and added to the weight over time was extra water the weight sat well on the back and the pack managed well. The pack was then hauled through a forest the stuff that makes Blair witch forest seem like a fairy tale and never punctures or tore despite being smashed and dragged through the branches. Then came the Dolerite sliding up and down the boulders for hours after the trauma the pack received for the 14 days I thought I had better give it a good check up it handled perfectly no tears punctures or signs of obvious wear at all. Awesome pack!

I love my Whippa Wollemi pack! I bought it to use on extended hiking trips into Tassies mountains and it has been amazing so far. Its lightweight, sturdy, spacious and very comfortable. It stood the test of scrub on the Southern Ranges and came out practically unscathed. Highly recommend!

Superb pack, tough and light as a feather

Bought the Whilppa Wollemi for tough Tasmanian hiking with lots of plants, rocks and other nasties that love eating packs. I am super happy and impressed with this pack. I also bought the side pockets which are the perfect size to stash your phone, snacks, foldable cup, etc. The pack is fabulously light, has heaps of room (but cinches to the size that you need), tough as nails and comfortable. This thing did not move on my back, even with some classically Tasmanian boulder hopping thrown in. The whole experience of buying from Whippa was first class. Great advice and support from the team. Thank you - I am an absolute Whippa convert (just annoyed that it took me 56 years to find them ??)

The pack of dreams

Great pack, took it on the Massiv Trail in Norway, didn’t let me down over the month I was out there! Comfy, light, absolutely no issues with it and it definitely held up better than I did. Front pouch is a highlight, absolutely cavernous and I could fit my rain gear, snacks, and a few bits and bobs and keep them dry. Great pack!

Customer service is also excellent, the tram at Summit helped me out a lot and sent it to me in tas before the trip. Thanks!

We were planning a...

We were planning a Tassie trip and considering getting Hyperlite Packs to cut down on weight. I came across Whippas, liked the look of them, the fact they are made in Australia, and decided to give them a go.
We needed them fairly quickly and the staff at Whippa did a great job in getting them to us in time. We bought an Overland 60 ultralight + Expedition hood and a Wollemi 90 Ultralight Expedition Back, hip belt pockets and stuff sacks.
The walk was 11 nights/12 days. Up Higgs Track to Ironstone hut, cross country to the Walls of Jerusalem, down the past Lakes Adelaide and Meston to Junction Lake, up over the Traveller Range to join Overland Track at Du Cane Gap. Then into Pine Valley and out over the Minotaur, Mt Gould, and the Gould Plateau. We had a mix of weather and some reasonably heavy off-track scrub bashing traversing to the Gould Plateau.
OK, so how did the packs go? In a word, Brilliant. We had ~20 kg in the Wollemi and ~17kg in the Overland. We found the packs to be comfortable, well thought out, easy to adjust and use, waterproof, and able to cope with serious scrub. I reckon the Wollemi is the most comfortable pack I have owned.
The expedition hood on the Overland took required some trial and error in terms of adjustment to ensure it didn’t slip, especially when knocked about by scrub. The various buckles took a little getting used to, while very strong, they needed to be positioned carefully to clip into place. The stuff sacks with waterproof zips were very good, maybe the large one could have been a little larger. We liked the front pocket which are great for storage of waterproofs, maps etc. We liked the pockets on the hip belt which are great for snacks, although occasionally the scrub caught them and they came undone.

Whippa Wollemi Ultralight 90

Right from our first correspondence, Robert and the Summit team were very responsive to my request for a larger 100L expedition sized pack for extended remote area and pack rafting trips. I got Whipper Wollemi in the 90L large with the expedition hood, helmet net, and two hip belt pockets. Mine was 1.3kg in my back length and hip belt size and 1.54kg with all the accessories. With everything fitted, it is still half the weight of my previous pack for the same volume.
It is sturdy and well made using robust materials and the seams taped and sealed. My hard to win over colleagues were impressed.
With rear pocket, side stretch pockets for a water bottle or paddles, The helmet hood when fitted, the internal sleeve for the hydration bladder, the expedition hood when fitted and the two hip belt pockets, storage, versatility and accessibility is excellent. The two hip belt pockets can easily take a phone, glasses case and some food bars. I cannot see me ever taking these off. They also sit nicely around the hip so that they don't get in the way when climbing.
The fitted comfort was high and while on this short trip I did not have it fully loaded, I'm looking forward to using it on an extended trip that it was designed for in the near future.
