DESIGN AND FEATURES
Whippa packs are designed and built in the Blue Mountains, Australia for Australian environments and we know just how spikey and abrasive the Australian bush can be. As such, we have made the conscious design decision to create packs that are designed to be almost fully enclosed. This helps to avoid incidental littering that can occur from having something like an externally stored Z-fold mat catching on tree branches and leaving pieces of foam strewn throughout our sensitive environments. It also makes our packs easier to repair and more durable due to not having flimsy external attachments that can easily break.
Unfortunately we are unable to take orders for aesthetic or feature customisations on Whippa packs. The way our production line runs is optimised so that we waste the smallest amount of fabric possible and are able to make multiple packs at once. One off orders slow this process down a lot more than you might expect in our small factory and generate a surprising amount of waste. If you have a specific need in relation to the sizing of the pack, please get in touch with us.
Yes, all Whippa packs have a bladder sleeve and a hydration port.
ACCESSORIES AND ADD ONS
The Expedition Hood line is designed to give extra capacity to your Whippa pack. They work best on a full backpack and are not designed to be used as an extra compartment unless extra capacity is needed.
It is important to check which Expedition Hood is compatible with your pack as they are not interchangeable.
- <45L packs take a 4L Hood
- 45-55L packs take a 6L Hood
- 60L packs take an 8L Hood
- 90L Packs take a 10L Hood
Yes, you can. An Expedition hood 8 UL will fit on the Access 60 just as it fits on an Overland 60.
Yes, you can. The Skimo 45 and 55 are compatible with an Expedition Hood 6 UL.
The attachment system that we use on the Expedition Hoods is unique to Whippa packs and is unlikely to be suited to a pack from another brand. We are also unable to swap buckles or toggles out to attempt to fit attachment points on a different brand's product.
Expedition Hoods do not have any straps that allow them to be carried separately to the main Whippa pack and, due to their shape, do not make sense to convert into a detachable day bag.
WATER PROOFING
Whippa backpacks are made out of waterproof materials and all of the seams are fully tape sealed to the best of our ability. This makes a pack that is incredibly WEATHER proof, but not entirely waterproof. This is because the pack has a hydration port that can allow for water ingress as well as, due to the complex nature of some of the seams, tape sealing them is not 100% effective. The end product is a pack that allows you to comfortably go out in the rain without a pack cover but we still recommend putting important items such as sleep systems or electronics inside drybags in the pack.
The fabrics that we use to make Whippa packs are more waterproof and much more durable than a pack cover. Leave the pack cover at home and save some extra weight, making your ultra light pack even lighter.
Due to the weather proof nature of Whippa packs, we do not believe a pack liner is necessary. We do, however, still recommend storing important items in dry bags as it is possible for water to get in through the hydration ports or at times when you have to open the pack in the rain and, if you are using a hydration bladder, it is possible to have issues with this as well.
DURABILITY
Whippa packs are made out of ultralight materials that are favoured for their durability to weight ratio with the most impressive being pound for pound stronger than steel. That being said, they are ultralight packs and the material is designed with this in mind, not durability, and so they will not stand up to the same kind of abuse that you may have expected of a canvas pack that weighed 3kg. In spite of that though, one of our key design focuses is how to make ultralight packs more durable and so we are constantly researching new materials and
Pound for pound the EPLX material used in the Overland 60 Light is not more durable than the Ultra 200X used on the main body of an Overland 60 Ultralight. With the EPLX being a heavier and thicker material however there are some minor durability discrepancies between the two materials but they are relatively insignificant.
MANUFACTURING
Whippa packs are made in Katoomba, a town in the Blue Mountains, 100km west of Sydney, Australia. The factory sits above the Summit Gear store on Katoomba St and uses the infrastructure and expertise of the Summit Gear team who have been making outdoor equipment for over 40 years.
BUYING A WHIPPA PACK: WAIT TIMES AND LOCATIONS
No. The costs of manufacturing in Australia are extremely high and maintaining our commitment to this whilst also trying to keep our products affordable means that Whippa packs are already priced at the lowest amount we can manage. They also won’t ever go on sale so you don’t need to worry about purchasing today and seeing them discounted a month later.
Due to extremely high demand we are unable to make promises about getting your pack in time for your trip. If you provide us with dates and details we will always do our best to complete your order in time but ordering as early as you can is the best way to ensure this is possible.
SIZING AND FIT
All of our packs come in a small, medium, and large version except for the Flash 22 which comes in a Small/Medium and a Medium/Large size.
We have designed and tested our packs with every body shape in mind and have succeeded in creating a pack harness that fits almost everyone.
If you have a specific concern regarding the fit of your pack don't hesitate to get in touch as designing packs that fit is a high priority for us and we will do what we can to make sure there is a Whippa pack for you.
